The last string is clipped, the guitar sounds bright again, and the tuner says everything is right. Then a few chords send you back to the tuning pegs. New guitar strings going flat can turn a routine string change into an evening of wondering what you broke.
Some retuning after installation is expected. D'Addario includes stretching and another tuning pass in its stopbar restringing instructions. But "they're new" is not a complete diagnosis if the same string keeps slipping without improvement.
This guide concerns steel strings on acoustic and electric guitars. Nylon strings and specialized instruments have their own installation requirements. The aim is to tell a settling set from a problem that deserves a closer look, without turning every string change into a hardware upgrade.

Watch the pattern, not one green light
A guitar tuner reports the note you are playing now. A correct reading does not tell you whether the next bend will leave that string at the same pitch.
Try a repeatable check. Tune the guitar, play a short passage at your normal strength, and check the open strings again. Use the same tuner settings and a similar picking attack each time. Note which strings moved and whether the correction is getting smaller. This is a suggested diagnostic routine, not a timed test with a universal pass mark.
If each pass needs less correction, continue checking as you play. If one string repeatedly drops much farther than the others, give that string's installation attention first. If the entire guitar behaves differently after a new gauge, save that detail for the setup check below.
You are looking for useful evidence. Repeatedly turning a peg without noticing the pattern only tells you that you can return the string to pitch.
New guitar strings going flat? Inspect what holds them
Start with the parts you handled during the change: the string's attachment at the bridge and its connection to the tuning post. Work with the instrument's instructions in front of you, and release tension before correcting an improperly seated string.
For a pin-bridge acoustic, Taylor's steel-string changing guide explains seating the ball end and gently checking that it has caught. A pin pushed into the hole is not, by itself, the whole procedure.
At the other end, look for a winding or locking arrangement that matches your tuner. Taylor's guide gives different winding instructions for bass and treble strings on the conventional posts it illustrates. Those instructions should not be copied blindly onto locking hardware.

Settle the strings without fighting them
Taylor recommends gently stretching newly fitted steel strings and retuning them. The useful word is gently. Treat this as controlled settling according to the maker's procedure, not a strength exercise or a reason to pull harder each time the tuner shows flat.
Return the string to its intended pitch and check it again after playing. Do not deliberately tune above the target as a shortcut. If the string appears damaged, its attachment moves, or something feels wrong, stop and inspect rather than increasing the force.
There is no honest universal promise that every fresh set becomes stable in two minutes. In its string-change guidance, D'Addario says the amount of adjustment and retuning varies. Leave yourself time to install, play, and check the set before an important session or show.
That is different from leaving an obvious installation problem alone and hoping it will disappear overnight.
A different gauge changes the question
Replacing a familiar set with the same specification and trying a substantially different gauge are not identical jobs.
D'Addario's string-tension explanation describes the relationship among gauge, scale length, and pitch. For the same instrument and tuning, a heavier comparable set generally brings greater tension. The company also warns that significant gauge or tension changes can require setup adjustments.
So if the new strings came with a different feel, action, or bridge position, record what changed. Keep the old packet or note the complete gauges instead of only saying "I switched to heavier strings."
Do not respond by turning the truss rod or moving saddles at random. Tell a technician the previous set, the new set, your tuning, and the behavior you observed. Waiting for fresh strings to settle is not a substitute for a setup that matches the instrument's new requirements.
Motorized tuning still needs a secure installation
TronicalTune's String Up/Down function helps wind and unwind a selected string. The online manual explains its operation and warns against manually tuning while the system is active.
Use the instructions for the system fitted to your guitar. The motors can perform a tuning operation, but a string that is not secured correctly still needs its installation corrected. Repeating the command is not a mechanical repair.
Once the strings are fitted properly, make the same playing-and-rechecking comparison you would use with another tuner. You want a guitar that holds the result, not merely one that reaches it once.
Know when to stop repeating the process
If you still have new guitar strings going flat after checking the installation and following the settling procedure, take the guitar to someone who can inspect it. You do not need to identify the exact faulty component before asking for help.
Bring a short account: which string moves, what playing action precedes it, whether the problem existed before the change, and whether the gauge changed. That gives a repairer something more useful than "the tuner won't work."
Before putting the cutters away, keep the string packet and make one last tuning check after playing. Next time, you will know what you installed and what happened afterward. Those two facts are a better starting point than buying replacement tuning machines on a hunch.
